Julia Garner and Dianne Wiest star in ‘Apartment 7A,’ which will tell the haunting, untold story of a supporting character.
Directed by Roman Polanski, Rosemary’s Baby is a horror classic that works with the viewer’s perceptions of the characters to create suspense. In the 1968 feature film, the child’s future remained unknown at the end of the plot, when the manipulated young mother (played by Mia Farrow) saw her baby for the first time, despite having been tricked into giving birth to the incarnation of evil.
The producers of the work, who had the rights to the sequel, spent years deciding what the next chapter of this story should be, and in April, Paramount+ announced that the cinema classic will have a sequel in 2024.
Apartment 7A is a prelude that will address a secondary character: the life of a young dancer (played by Julia Garner), who suffers an injury and finds herself “drawn to dark forces” when a peculiar couple promises her a chance at fame. In the classic, Garner’s character had already appeared, Terry, originally played by Angela Dorian.
The sequel is in the hands of the filmmaker Natalie Erika Jamesknown for her work in Macabre Relic (2020), Creswick (2017) and Drum Wave (2018). In an interview with Vanity Fairthe director tells more details about the launch of Apartment 7A:
“When I was first approached about the project, I was very skeptical,” Natalie says. “I certainly would never have signed on to do a remake of such a classic film. But it was a joy to be able to play with the world of the novel.” Ira Levin and with the characters. I think my motivation for taking it on was that I felt there was a different emotional journey to explore and to do it in a way that bent the genre a little bit.”
Director Natalie James also promises to address issues already raised in the 1968 film:
The film is very much about Terry and her ability to use her body in her craft, but also how that is used against her as well. The theme of bodily autonomy being taken away is obviously very strong in the first film as well.”
Apartment 7Awill premiere on Paramount+ on September 27th.
