Beware of survival and evil fans! No Way Up aims to be a kind of genre-defining movie, taking you from a disaster movie about an imminent plane crash to a shark movie with all its teeth bared. Therefore, this feature film by Claudio Fahey is destined to be the ultimate movie that will make people shiver in their cottages.

It tells how a small group of passengers boarding an old cuckoo saw their flight take a dramatic turn when an explosion caused the plane to crash into the middle of the ocean. When the plane crashes straight into the water, it lands on the sea floor near a gully.

Of course, the water level is rising, but some passengers feel safe thanks to the air pocket. But not for long. As they see a shark circling their plane, ready to eat them alive! They will have to survive the impossible, but how?

Thus, No Way Up presents itself as a mega combination of disaster movie, thriller and survival, bringing together characters from different backgrounds for one goal: survival. Among them we find Sophie Mackintosh (seen in Brave New World), Phyllis Logan (Mrs. Hughes from Donutton Abbey) and Colm Meaney (a face known from cinema for supporting roles and Trekkies).

Beyond this rather improbable mix of genres – the film has an average audience rating of 1.9 out of 5 on AlloCiné – it seems that its director Claudio Fah wanted to pay tribute to his bed movies. As you can see in this very well-watched montage offered on Canal+’s X account (formerly Twitter):

There are no less than seven quotes in this montage, with shots directly inspired by cult films such as Fight Club, Final Destination, Shipwrecked on the 747, Jurassic Park, Titanic and two other French films The Deep House and Le Chant’s.

in the interview YahooThe Swiss director cites his sources of inspiration and films that have influenced him since early childhood: “When I saw these movies as a kid, I was in awe of the 747 crash, The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, where location and setting play a huge role in this movie, of course it does in this movie.

and added: “And of course, like a lot of people, Jaws is one of my favorite movies of all time, and without trying to take too much from it and being in a very different league, we’ve done a subtle homage to that movie. I couldn’t resist paying homage to the movie that made me afraid of water as a child.

No Way Up is currently available on Canal+ and MyCanal.
