Since its premiere in 2018, ‘Cobra Kai’ has conquered different generations in its five seasons. Derived from the classic ‘Karate Kid’ films of the 1980s, this series has managed to keep fans interested thanks to the fact that the current plot shows the evolution of the protagonists of the first film, Daniel LaRusso (the character played by Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (the role of William Zamka).
In the movies, these characters were bitter rivals, a confrontation that started for the love of a girl and culminated in the famous Valley Tournament, a karate competition that marked their lives.
From the beginning of “Cobra Kai,” the lives of LaRusso and Lawrence have been intertwined, not only through their pasts, but also through their children.
Daniel has Samantha (Mary Mouser) and Johnny has Robby (Tanner Buchanan), who becomes the link between their parents’ past and present.
The plot begins when Johnny decides to revive the Cobra Kai dojo, albeit with a new vision. Intent on redeeming the dojo’s image and distancing himself from the violent teachings of his former sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove), Johnny is inspired by Miguel Díaz (Xolo Maridueña), a young Latino who turns his life around thanks to karate .
For his part, Daniel, now a successful businessman, is led to follow the teachings of his mentor Mr. Miyagi (Noriyuki ‘Pat’ Morita) to neutralize Cobra Kai’s influence on the youth of the Valley.
First, he tries to do it legally by trying to stop Cobra Kai from participating in the Valley Karate Tournament. However, failing to succeed, he decides to open his own dojo to compete directly in the competition.
The story takes an unexpected turn with the return of John Kreese, who, with the help of Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), a former partner, manages to take over the Cobra Kai dojo.
Faced with this new threat, Johnny founds Eagle Fang Karate, along with Miguel and other youths, while Cobra Kai gains influence and uses it to promote a “No Mercy” philosophy that turns its students into abusers.
To combat this growing threat, Johnny and Daniel join forces, combining their dojos to take on Cobra Kai, who has already spread his brand across the valley. Terry Silver, out of ambition, betrays Kreese and sends him to prison on trumped-up charges, taking over the dojo with the goal of taking his karate style to a higher level and qualifying for the Sekai Taikai Tournament, the world karate championship.
Daniel and Johnny, determined not to give up, team up with Chozen (Yuji Okumoto), an old rival that LaRusso met on his trip to Okinawa and who now helps him reconnect with Mr. Miyagi’s legacy. Together, with their students, they prepare to compete in the Sekai Taikai and uncover Terry Silver, the real culprit of the act of vandalism for which Kreese was imprisoned. The Cobra Kai students, having just discovered the truth about Silver, leave the dojo.
The fifth season ends with the ‘Cobra Kai’ dismantled and the valley freed from its influence. With Cobra Kai eliminated, the senseis and students must now decide how they will face each other in the Sekai Taikai. This situation marks the beginning of the series’ sixth and final season.
Netflix releases 8-minute preview of ‘Cobra Kai’ final season
Although the fifth season ends on a relatively peaceful note, the sixth season promises new challenges. Divided into three parts of five chapters each, this series is coming to Netflix on July 18, and to increase fans’ excitement, the streaming platform has released an eight-minute preview.
The video shows Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) chatting with Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) about the apparent end of the karate wars after Terry Silver’s defeat. However, Amanda warns of the possibility of John Kreese returning.
Daniel, confident of his victory, tries to enjoy the moment, although she prefers to adopt a more cautious attitude. The preview also reveals that Amanda doesn’t want the boys to compete in the Sekai Taikai, while Daniel is very excited for Miyagi-Do to get the recognition it deserves.
Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) also plans his future, vowing that if he wins the Sekai Taikai, he will open more dojos and expand his style of karate. Meanwhile, Eagle Fang Karate begins to rise thanks to Johnny and his followers, who take on the task of rebuilding what’s left of their demolished dojo.
The question that arises this season is whether the protagonists will manage to stay united in the face of adversity. The possibility of internal conflicts and the appearance of new challenges in Sekai Taikai are elements that promise to keep fans in suspense.
The first part of the sixth season of “Cobra Kai” will arrive on Netflix on July 18. The eight-minute preview, available on the platform, offers a taste of what’s to come, with scenes that combine the show’s signature action with moments of reflection from the main characters.
