Nick Larson: How hints of sex were hidden in VF

In the early 90’s the animated series Nick Larson landed in France with the impetus of Club Dorothée. Success is almost instant!

In a few months, the private detective created by Tsuka Hojo has become a real social phenomenon. This character, both a wonderful slut and a sexy maniac, shocked the youth of an entire generation.

However, the distribution of the anime had some difficulties due to its sometimes very rude nature, especially with regard to hints about sex.

In France, Nick Larson suffered many blows from Chisel to enjoy words or situations that are sometimes scabbard or rhyme.

For example, dialogues and nudity scenes were censored, blood was cleansed and simply removed. The same fate befell the sections where Laura was disguised as a man.

At the time, TF1 preferred to use censorship to protect young audiences from violent or sexual images.

Unfortunately, the cuts were made erratically and some translations were deliberately left close, which sometimes makes it difficult to understand certain episodes.

For example, Nick Larson often gave meetings to prospective clients at Love Hotels. Usually Japanese, these places are for couples. You can book a room for an hour or overnight.

These places offer customers two advantages: an intimate relationship with the social environment and the realization of certain fantasies that require scenery and a specific atmosphere.

To make the most of the innate sexual hints in this sequence, the French version of the anime has decided to replace Love Hotels with vegetarian restaurants. This, of course, had no consistency in the course of the story, and fans were always interested in this choice, to put it mildly, comical.

Thus, to avoid annoying the young audience, the slightly difficult situations were deliberately comical in order to eliminate the obscene side as much as possible. The same method was used against the perpetrators.

Nick Larson’s funniest wobs

The French voices of the bad guys had to take on a silly tone to emphasize the comic potential, to reduce the inner violence of certain characters.

In the video above, you can hear how a criminal orders his guardian “Make an owl” To the police. Thus, VF avoids words like “kill” or “liquidation” that are much more obvious and violent.

To detect episodes without original censorship, go to DNA or MyTF1 platforms.
