Remake of classic anime ‘Ranma 1/2’ gets trailer

The production maintains the premises and traits of the original characters and will be distributed by Netflix in October

Netflix Japan has revealed the release date and first trailer for the remake of “Ranma 1/2,” a classic manga and anime from the 1980s. The preview shows that the premise and even the traits of the original characters have been maintained, but the pace seems more hysterical and frenetic.

One of the most beloved creations of manga artist Rumiko Takahashi, author of “InuYasha” and “Urusei Yatsura: Turma do Barulho”, “Ranma 1/2” was published as a manga between 1987 and 1996 in the magazine Shonen Sunday, for a total of 38 volumes. bound by Shogakukan, while the animated series had only two seasons, aired between 1989 and 1990, and left several popular plots unsuitable. In Brazil, the anime was broadcast on Cartoon Network and PlayTV.

Captivating plot

In the premise of the series, Ranma Saotome is a young man who, after falling into a cursed fountain in China, transforms into a woman when doused with cold water. He is engaged to Akane Tendo, a quarrelsome girl, in a marriage arranged by her parents. Ranma has to deal with several problems with Akane’s angry mood, constantly being attacked by the young woman. Furthermore, the protagonist still tries to hide his sexual duality – he always reverts to male when bathing in hot water – while other characters try to break up his relationship.

The series shows Ranma’s dilemma with a comical approach, but also explores his feminine side when he becomes a woman. In one of the most famous stories of the manga, he loses his memory and the plot shows what his life would be like if he decided to remain a woman. Thanks to this dual gender, Ranma has become a symbol for the trans community and is considered one of the best LGBTQ+ characters in anime and manga.

The remake is produced by studio MAPPA (from “Attack on Titan”), directed by Kônosuke Uda (“One Piece”). The premiere will take place on October 6.
