Brazilians win 500m C1 heats at Plovdiv World Championships

Brazilians Mateus Nunes and Gabriel Nascimento easily won their qualifying heats in the 500m C1 at the Canoe Sprint Junior and U23 World Championships, in Plodviv, Bulgaria, this Thursday (18). Mateus won his series in the junior competition and maintained his 100% success rate in the competition, while Gabriel advanced in the under-23 competition.

Keléu, as Mateus is known, competed in the third round of the C1 500m junior qualifiers. He didn’t get off to a good start, but he picked up speed in the final half of the race and won with a time of 1’58’425, almost two seconds ahead of second-placed Czech Ondrej Visner’s 2’00’322. Third place went to Chilean Joaquin Lagos, with a time of 2min00s758.

With his performance Mateus has secured the semifinal of the competition, which will take place on Saturday (20), at 11:21. It is worth noting that he is also in the semifinal of the 1000 meters C1, which will take place this Friday. In addition, Keléu is in the final of the 500 meters C2, along with compatriot Lucas Espírito Santo. This Friday will also be the match for the medal of the doubles.

Mateus Nunes is one of the great promises of Brazilian speed canoeing. Although he is only 18 years old and still competes in the junior category, the Bahian has been called up for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, which will begin next week. The speed canoe race in the mega event of the French capital will not begin until August 6.

Gabriel Nascimento also remains

In the under-23 competition, Gabriel Nascimento won his heat in the 500 meters C1 with an even greater advantage. In the fourth and final heat he clocked 1min49s721, ahead of Germany’s David Bauschke, with 1min52s071. Third place went to Hungary’s Kristof Kollar, with 1min56s240. With his performance Gabriel also advanced to the semifinal, which will take place on Saturday starting at 11:39.

Gabriel Nascimento is also 18 years old – but was born in 2005 – and competes with athletes up to four years older than him. Like Mateus, he trains in Lagoa Santa (MG) with the permanent Brazilian canoe speed team, captained by Lauro Pinda. Gabriel is trying to retain the C1 500m under-23 world title with Brazil, as Filipe Vieira was the champion last year.
