First of all, don’t like Game of Thrones! That’s a lesson learned for the current Netflix series

Warning, spoilers! This article returns to the story of the SupraCell series. If you haven’t seen it and don’t want to know what it contains, read no further.

SupraCell has been a hit on Netflix for three weeks now, despite the fact that the British series has not benefited from any advertising. Last week, it was number one on Netflix’s top global series with nearly 12 million views. This week, the series is down by more than 7 million views, but still holds the top spot in the world’s best English-language series.

The man behind this success

It’s a real surprise success for this sci-fi series featuring black characters living in South London who develop superpowers. And it’s the work of Rapman – or “Reps” as he’s known to his friends and colleagues – who is a man of many talents.

This Brit, whose real name is Andrew Onwubolu, is a rapper, record producer, screenwriter and director. After finding fame on YouTube through rapping, the 35-year-old wrote and directed his first film in 2019, Blue Story, a musical crime drama that was distributed internationally by Paramount.

Around the same time, Rappman began a series that asked the question, “What if there was a science fiction where people were from my background and acted like me, but had powers?” Thus SupraCell was born.

What are SupraCell’s challenges?

The series follows the lives of five seemingly ordinary people living in South London, whose lives are turned upside down by extraordinary opportunities. Delivery driver Michael, played by Tosin Cole, discovers that he can teleport, freeze and time travel.

He is transported to the future, where an old version of himself explains that if he can’t reunite the group and defeat the evil hoods who are chasing him, his fiancĂ©e Dion (Adelayo Adedayo) will die.

It turns out that Ray, played by actor Eddie Marsan, has sent these people as part of a larger, more sinister plan in which powerful blacks capture and – if they try to escape, as one of the hero’s mothers said – kill them.

How does season 1 end?

Unfortunately for Michael, Dion dies in the season finale. And Rapman has a very clear answer to the question The Hollywood Reporter On Dion’s possible return if the series is renewed:

As for me, I’ll say this: If you start bringing characters back from the dead, where are the stakes? If you know anyone can come back… I will tell you that my second favorite TV show of all time is Game of Thrones. As soon as I saw Jon Snow come to life, I fell in love with Jon Snow, but we’ll see.”

and added: “No, we’re going to do it every time now, every time we lose a character that fans love. So I’m not going to bring anyone back from the dead. That’s what I will say.“This is clearly suggested by Rappman. If Netflix orders a season 2 of SupraCell – which would make sense given the series’ good viewership in the two weeks since its launch – we shouldn’t expect to see Dion again.

SupraCell is currently available on Netflix.
