Netflix will discontinue its cheapest, ad-free basic plan in the United States, the company said Thursday (18). The move follows a statement released in January, when the streaming service revealed it was gradually phasing out the option, starting in the United Kingdom and Canada.
Netflix Suspends Cheapest Plan in US:
Users in the United States who want an ad-free viewing experience on Netflix will now only have two options: the more expensive Standard and Premium plans.
The platform also released the latest numbers for its Standard plan with ads, which continues to grow thanks to the strategy adopted by the company: a record 277.65 million total subscribers, surpassing competitors such as Disney+, Peacock and Max (from Warner Bros.).
In short, Netflix saw a 34% increase in new subscriptions in the second quarter of this year, with 8.05 million new users.
Netflix: Changes in Brazil?
In Brazil, even the cheapest basic plan without ads, the one for R$25.90, is no longer available to new subscribers.
When you check the streaming home screen, only the plans available are: standard with ads, standard without ads, and premium.

Prices have also increased recently (in May). The Standard plan with ads went from R$ 18.90 to R$ 20.90, the Standard from R$ 39.90 to R$ 44.90 and the Premium, the most expensive of the service, went from R$ 55.90 to R$ 59.90.
Netflix’s monthly fee increase had been expected since the beginning of the year, when the company raised prices in the United States.
