Who are the main actors of House of the Dragon?

The highly anticipated Game of Thrones spin-off series, House of the Dragon, has assembled a talented cast to bring another epic Westeros story to life.

The plot is set in Westeros, 200 years before Game of Thrones. House Targaryen reigns supreme with its dragons. King Viserys I Targaryen, on the Iron Throne, faces a dilemma: choosing his heir.

Traditionally it would be his brother Daemon, an ambitious warrior, but Viserys prefers his daughter Rhaenyra, defying the norms of the time with his choice.

Here are the main actors and their contributions to the series, visible on Max’s streaming,

Emma D’Arcy (adult Rhaenyra Targaryen) and Milly Alcock (young Rhaenyra Targaryen):

Daughter of King Viserys and heir to the throne, known as the “Delight of the Realm.”

Actress Emma D’Arcy has a few characters in TV series, such as in the horror comedy Truth Seekers (2020), where she plays Astrid, a young woman haunted by several ghosts.

Milly Alcock can be seen in the Australian series Upright and has also been cast as Supergirl in the upcoming Superman film, directed by James Gunn.

Paddy Considine (Viserys I Targaryen):

The fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms, chosen by a council of lords for his warm and kind nature.

Considine has worked on series such as Peaky Blinders, playing the role of Father John Hughes, one of the series’ villains, and in the TV series The Outsider.

Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen):

Brother of King Viserys and an unpredictable warrior, known as the “Rogue Prince”.

Smith rose to fame playing the eleventh incarnation of the Doctor, a time-travelling Time Lord, in Doctor Who (2010–2013). He can also be seen in The Crown (2016–2019) as Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II.

Olivia Cooke (Alicent Hightower):

Rhaenyra’s former best friend and King Viserys’ second wife, known for her beauty and political intelligence.

Cooke has starred in films such as Ready Player One (2018) as Samantha, the protagonist’s virtual friend. She is also in the film Sound of Metal (2019).

Rhys Ifans (Otto Hightower):

Alicent’s father and Hand of the King, conspiring to put his nephew on the throne.

Ifans is a famous English actor seen in several comedy and drama productions. His most notable works include Notting Hill (1999) as Spike, the grumpy agent of actress Anna Scott, and The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) as Curt Connors/The Lizard, a scientist who transforms into a giant reptile.

Steve Toussaint (Corlys Velaryon):

Known as the “Sea Serpent”, he is the lord of House Velaryon and a famous sailor.

Toussaint can be seen in films such as Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010) as Sheik Amar, leader of King Xerxes’ royal guard, and Cutthroat Island (1995) as Mr. Glasspool, a ruthless pirate in search of a legendary treasure.

Eve Best (Rhaenys Targaryen):

Cousin of King Viserys, known as the “Queen Who Never Was”.

Best can be seen in series such as Nurse Jackie (2009–2015) as Dr. Eleanor O’Hara, a devoted physician who faces personal and professional challenges, and in the Oscar-winning film “The King’s Speech” (2010) as Wallis Simpson, lover and future wife of King Edward VIII.

Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon II Targaryen):

Sixth King of the Seven Kingdoms, son of Viserys and Alicent, known for his hedonistic behavior.

Glynn-Carney worked in the hit film Dunkirk (2017) as Peter, a British soldier trying to escape France during World War II, as well as Tolkien (2019) as Christopher Tolkien, son of famous author JRR Tolkien.

Jefferson Hall (twin brothers Jason and Tyland Lannister):

Jason Lannister: Lord of Casterly Rock and Warden of the West, an arrogant hunter and warrior who unsuccessfully vies for the hand of Rhaenyra Targaryen.

Tyland Lannister: Jason’s younger twin brother and astute politician, Master of Ships and later Master of Coin after the rise of Aegon II Targaryen.

Hall has appeared in hit series such as Westworld (2016–present) as Aaron Sizemore, a security guard at the Westworld theme park, and Vikings (2013–2019) as Guthrum, a cunning and ruthless Viking leader.

Graham McTavish (Harrold Westerling):

Knight of the Kingsguard charged with protecting Princess Rhaenyra.

McTavish is known to fans of the Geek Culture series for his roles as Dwalin in The Hobbit film trilogy and as the Saint of Killers in the AMC series Preacher.
