When the title of the series is not translated, its meaning is not always understood by the general French public. This is especially true of those who will die, whose English name was retained by the French version. But the translation of the title is not enough to fully reveal its meaning.
“The About to Die” is translated into French who will die. A series depicting gladiator fights in the Roman Empire, this title clearly indicates the hard fate that awaits the heroes of the program.
The series will return to the origins of the Colosseum in Rome
But the title of the series offered by Prime Video hides another meaning. The formula used both in the original version and in French refers to a famous saying attributed to the gladiators who paraded before the emperor’s tribune before the battles began: “Hail Caesar, hail those who are about to die.”
Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Emperor Vespasian in the series. Although he is not among the most famous historical figures of the time, he still entered posterity by ordering the construction of the Colosseum in Rome (although the work was completed after his death, during the reign of Emperor Titus).
The origin of this famous saying is disputed
The historical origin of this expression is still disputed. But the formula nevertheless entered the collective imagination and now appears in many works of popular culture. It is for this reason that the writer Daniel P. Mannix decided to use it as the title of his novel, which was adapted into a series of the same name.
This line is also spoken in many epic movies, most notably Gladiator. Which, of course, is not accidental, because Ridley Scott’s film was the main inspiration for Daniel P. Adapted from Mannix’s novel, although the latter is not recorded in the credits.
The series to die for is now available exclusively on Prime Video.
