College professor Jo Harding (Helen Hunt) has a big dream: to acquire detailed information on tornadoes. But in the era of 1996, the only way to do so accurately is to get as close as possible to a tornado and make it out alive.
Knowing this goal, her ex-husband, Bill (Bill Paxton), created the Dorothy Device: a cutting-edge technology capable of capturing information from a tornado without destroying the hardware. After a long period of research, Jo and her students have managed to finalize the prototype and intend to use it in the most devastating storm in decades.

The only way the device works is if it is too close to the tornado, but that would put Jo, Bill, and the students at risk. Can they find shelter from the winds after turning on Dorothy’s prototype?
