Based on a book, House of the Dragon, known as “A Casa do Dragão” in Brazil, is a highly successful spin-off of Game of Thrones. To give you an idea, when it debuted on August 21, 2022, it reached nearly 10 million viewers in the US, becoming the biggest debut for a series in HBO history.
The story takes place 173 years before the events of Game of Thrones, bringing several facts about the height of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros.
Which book inspired the House of the Dragon series?
House of the Dragon is set during the reign of Viserys I (Paddy Considine) and the war of succession to the throne. The series used the book “Fire & Blood”, translated into Portuguese, “Fogo & Sangue”, from 2018, written by George RR Martin, the same writer of “A Song of Ice and Fire”.
This is the story of the dispute between half-siblings Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen for the Iron Throne after their father’s death. The former, played by Tom Glynn-Carney, is the son of their father’s second marriage and is considered the most capable of ascending the throne. The latter, played by Emma D’Arcy, is the eldest. However, she must deal with the stigma that Westeros has never been ruled by a queen.
In this politically conflicted scenario, the commander of the King’s Landing City Watch and the former king’s youngest son, Daemon Targaryen, played by Matt Smith, could enter the dispute.
