House of the Dragon: Who Was the Best Targaryen King?

House of the Dragon: Who Was the Best Targaryen King?

The entire Game of Thrones universe revolves around one goal: the Iron Throne. In House of the Dragon, a spin-off series that takes us more than 100 years before the original work to show the details of the Targaryen dynasty, the first scene even summarizes the root of the disputes and conflicts: always the choice of a new king!

The production begins with the designation of a successor for Jaehaerys I Targaryen, grandson of Aegon the Conqueror (precursor of the family). Not surprisingly, the story is adapted from there, since his reign was considered one of the best in Westeros: he became known as The Conciliator, The Wise and, later, The Old King, since he ruled for a long time (55 years). ).

House of the Dragon: Who Was the Best Targaryen King?

The reign of Jaehaerys I, the fourth Targaryen king on the Iron Throne, was marked by political stability, economic prosperity, and peace in the Seven Kingdoms, thanks in large part to the reforms he implemented.

Considered wise beyond his years – he ascended the throne at the age of 14 – he was well-spoken, open-minded, and considered both a gentleman and a brave man. One of his greatest achievements was the abolition of the law of first night, which gave lords the power to sleep with their vassals’ wives on their wedding day: from this came the bastards, later called dragonseed.

It is worth remembering that Jaehaerys I ascended to the throne after the harsh reign of Maegor I (his uncle), son of Aegon the Conqueror. Maegor was skilled with the sword and fueled disputes and competitions, which generated several conflicts between the kingdoms. It was he who managed to include the marriage between Targaryens (incest) in the Faith of the Seven (the dominant religion between the kingdoms), claiming that the family was pure and superior. He became known as the Cruel.

The order of kings who sat on the Iron Throne until the House of the Dragon is:

  1. Aegon I, The Conqueror;
  2. Aenys I Targaryen (son);
  3. Maegor I Targaryen, the Cruel (son);
  4. Jaehaerys I Targaryen, The Justicar (nephew);
  5. Viserys I Targaryen, The Peacemaker (great-grandson).

It is worth noting that, besides Jaehaerys I, other kings of Westeros have also distinguished themselves for their good government. This is the case of Aegon, the Conqueror, although there are reservations due to the change of government and the insecurities of the kingdoms regarding unification, which led to rebellions. Viserys I the Peacemaker, Aegon V the Unlikely, and Daeron II the Good also distinguished themselves as good rulers.

Also, of course, we can’t talk about the best Targaryen kings without mentioning some of the worst, which seems much easier to me. So, among them are: Maegor I, the Cruel, Aegon II, the Usurper, Aegon IV, the Unworthy and Aerys II, the Mad King: the beginning of this reign was peaceful, but the monarch’s madness made him a rebellious and cruel noble.

Who sits on the Iron Throne after Jaehaerys I Targaryen?

When Jaehaerys I dies – he dies after falling ill during a Faith rebellion against the Targaryen family’s incest practices – the one who ascends the Iron Throne is the already known Viserys I Targaryen, his eldest son. His reign was also known as peaceful, although the seeds of the Dragon Dance were planted during his reign.

After his death, they already know: it is brother against brother, Rhaenyra (Black) and Aegon II (Green), and dragon against dragon: the Dance of the Dragons.
