Datena says he may once again give up his political candidacy

The former Band presenter revealed that he had not received support from members of his own party (PSDB)

José Luiz Datena could once again give up his political candidacy due to disagreements with the party. The former Banda presenter will have to consider whether to continue as a pre-candidate for mayor of São Paulo until Saturday (27/7), when the convention to formalize the PSDB (Brazilian Social Democratic Party) ticket will take place.

In an interview with Folha de S. Paulo, Datena stressed that his political debut is at risk due to “internal problems”, which he said he will monitor carefully before making a decision. “If this nonsense continues that the party is talking to other people to insert into the party without telling me, I will not run,” he complained.

“If the [Joe] Biden can resign at any time, why can’t I? From the beginning I said, ‘If they make fun of me, I’ll give up,'” he added, citing the withdrawal of the current US president, who was running for re-election.

Lack of support

In another section, Datena also commented that he had been “shot” within the association by members who preferred to support the current mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB). The presenter lamented the lack of consensus and support from his political colleagues.

“A good part of the party went to Ricardo Nunes. There are those who have changed federation [PSDB-Cidadania] the entire city of São Paulo. I found out later. Nevertheless, these idiotic criticisms continued, which can only come from the bowels of the party. I hope that by Saturday the PSDB will solve its problems, that we will go to a consensus convention and that the PSDB members will be sure that the virus that destroyed the party was that of individuality and vanity.”

The former presenter has also considered running for mayor of São Paulo, but the decision is entirely in the hands of the party. “My will is [escala] 10. If I feel like the kids are going to bother me at the convention on Saturday, I won’t go. It’s over,” he said.

This is the fifth time that Datena has made electoral plans, and so far he has always given up at the last minute. Previously, he had given up twice on running for a Senate seat and two other opportunities to try to be elected mayor and vice mayor of São Paulo, when, in reality, the polls gave him a better chance of success.
