This Wednesday 24 July at 9.10pm, 6ter broadcasts Four Weddings and a Funeral, a mini-series inspired by the iconic 90s film, created by Mindy Kaling and Matt Warburton, the fiction following four American friends As luck would have it, they find themselves at a wedding in London only to find their lives turned upside down by an explosive revelation at the altar.
They have no idea for a second of the year that lies ahead of them, filled with romance and heartache. Relationships will be made and broken, political scandals will be exposed, and of course there will be four weddings… and a funeral.
As for the casting, Natalie Emmanuel, who played Missandei in Game of Thrones, Brandon Michael Smith (You’re the Worst), Rebecca Rittenhouse (The Mindy Project) and Nikesh Patel (Starstruck) play the four friends.
Amazing romantic comedy
We’re always a little hesitant to discover a series that’s a remake, reboot, or adaptation of a cult film, as is the case with Four Weddings and a Funeral. In general, nothing is better than the original and we are logically doubtful. However, four weddings and a funeral are a pleasant surprise.
Finally, at the end of the pilot, we tell ourselves that the series doesn’t have much to do with the movie, even if we find a few nods to Richard Curtis (screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral) and especially to Love. Actually here and there – the Wet Wet Wet song “Love Is All Around” or a tribute to the sign sequence between Andrew Lincoln and Keira Knightley.
The main character is no longer Hugh Grant, a British seducer who falls in love with Andy McDowell, who is just as commitment-averse as he is, but Natalie Emanuel, who plays Maya, a brilliant American but unlucky lover who falls for her unawares. In love with… his best friend’s girlfriend.
If you hate romantic comedies, you can say straight away: Go ahead, because we find all the clichés of the genre. On the other hand, if you are a blue flower and want to have a good time watching complex stories with cute and lovable characters, you should like the series.
You may find yourself without realizing it, with little sparkles in your eyes and a big, blissful smile at certain scenes.
Four Weddings and a Funeral probably won’t become as iconic as that movie, but we can become more of Maya and her group of friends.
Diversity is also a new element (Maya is mixed, Kashi is Pakistani and Craig is black) to be appreciated for what it’s worth, and we want to trust Mindy Kaling and her sidekick Matt Warburton to modernize Quatre weddings in 2019 style.
Find four weddings for the funeral, February 6, this Wednesday, July 24 from 9:10 p.m.
