Was ‘Stranger Things’ Inspired by a Colombian Commercial? The viral video of the Netflix series

The ending of “Stranger Things 4” had deaths and fans took shots at their favorite characters with memes that are already flooding the Internet. While some audience members won’t know the fate of their heroes until next season, a new theory could get their attention.

A few days before the premiere of the remaining episodes of season 4, a rumor was circulating on social networks that the story of the popular Netflix series was inspired by a Colombian commercial. Although this version seems convincing, the reality could be a bit more complicated.

‘Stranger Things’: Is your story based on a Colombian commercial?

On the social network TikTok there are several videos where a catchy song accompanied by an old animation seems to perfectly describe the plot of the first season of “Stranger Things”.

The piece is about a boy who, while riding his bicycle home, is surprised by a creature that causes him to deviate from his path.

“This monster is not my friend,” sings the boy from the supposed ad.

The boy arrives at a place that looks a lot like his home, but with the difference that everything looks upside down and he can’t find his mother anywhere. At the end, the protagonist of the video asks for help to escape from a monster that wants to eat him.

The song’s lyrics and character design could lead some fans to believe it’s the inspiration for the Netflix series, but it’s actually an old ad campaign.

The alleged advertisement is actually a video called “With Stranger Things I am Happy”, which premiered on November 9, 2017 on the official channel of Netflix Latin America, but due to fate it recently went viral on social networks such as TikTok or Instagram. .

The purpose of this video was to publicize the premiere of the second season of “Stranger Things”. For audiences in Mexico and other parts of Latin America, the song’s melody went unnoticed, but not so for fans in Colombia, who immediately found a similarity between the Netflix song and an old candy commercial.

“I’m happy with my Gudiz because they’re made of corn, they’re colored balls, they taste sweet,” the candy commercial song begins.

For now, you can only see this ad thanks to some YouTubers who decided to upload it to their account as a way to remember their childhood. In the comments, users of the platform assert that the material was on the air in 1987.

It’s possible that Netflix wanted to promote their series with a slightly darker take on this commercial, to evoke nostalgia in their Latin American audience, especially the Colombian one.

It’s not known why the ‘With Stranger Things’ I am happy video reached its peak of popularity almost 5 years after its release, but it served its original purpose very well: that fans paid more attention to the series of Eleven and friends of .
