Sao Paulo City Sees Increase in Road Deaths in First Half of Year

The city of St. Paul registered increase in road fatalities between January and June of this year. In total they were 520 dead in the capital Sao Pauloaccording to data from Infosiga, the state government’s accident monitoring system. This is the highest number since 2015, when the total number of fatalities in the first half of the year was 598. Compared to the same period last year – 395 deaths – the increase was 31.6%.

The City of São Paulo says that most traffic accidents “are the result of disrespect for traffic signs and traffic laws” and that the municipal government has taken measures to prevent accidents on the city’s streets and avenues. According to Infosiga, most of the cases involve motorcyclists. The group represents 40% of the total deaths, with 236 victims. They are followed by pedestrians, 28% (192 deaths); people in cars, 8% (55); cyclists, 4% (22); and bus and truck passengers – who together account for 10 deaths.

From the profile of the victims, the vast majority are men (83%) and the majority are between 20 and 29 years old. In this age group, which represents 24.3% of the total, there were 117 deaths; in 39 cases the age was not available. Half of the victims (50%) were motorists; 36%, pedestrians and 10%, passengers – in 16 cases (3.1%), the data was not available.

Of the accident profile, 82.5% occurred on municipal roads (429 cases) and 10.8% on motorways. In 35 cases (6.7%) the information on the place where the accident occurred is not available on Infosiga.

During 2023, the capital recorded the highest number of deaths since 2015, with 928 deaths.
