“In the depths of the Seine”: sharks in the rivers, the cleaning of the Seine and other doubts resolved

Exists shark movies scarier than ‘Jaws’Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1970s film. Some fans believe that “Under Paris” could be one of them.

The film is about a shark, Lilith, who, due to climate change and environmental pollution, mutates and ends up living in the Seine. Lilith stalks the Parisians and scares the swimmers in a race in the river.

Since the film, several doubts have arisen about the Seine River, sharks and especially about the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Could there be sharks in the Seine like In the Deep of the Seine?

In fact, it is extremely unlikely that there were sharks in the Seine as in the film.

The sharks of the Atlantic Ocean are saltwater and could not survive in the fresh water of the Seine. This is in contrast to other sharks that can, such as the spear or bull shark, which live in warmer areas.

Not to mention that the environmental conditions and water quality of the Seine could have harmful consequences for sharks.

However, other unusual species have been found in the river, such as an orca found dead in the Seine in 2022 or a beluga.

Other dangerous animals have also been spotted in the Paris River over the years, including a crocodile, a piranha, a three-meter long python and several seals.

“In the depths of the Seine”: How deep is the river Seine and where does it begin and end?

The depth of the Seine River varies by region. For example, near the Eiffel Tower it reaches about 5 meters deep, at Notre-Dame it is about 4 meters and at the Pont du Alma it goes down to 7 meters.

The Seine River rises far from Paris in the commune of Source-Seine northwest of Dijon. It is 776 kilometers long and is the second longest river in France after the Loire.

The Seine flows through various French communities such as Royes, Melun, Corbeil, Paris, Mantes and Rouen, and finally empties into the English Channel between Le Havre and Honfleur.

“In the depths of the Seine”: can you swim in the river Seine?

As “Emily in Paris” caused controversy in FranceDeep in the Seine also gave us something to talk about.

One of the problems facing the protagonists of “In the Depths of the Seine” is that the mayor of Paris is determined that the participants in a triathlon swim in the river despite objections. This shows that the river is in good condition to be used for similar purposes in the Olympics.

In real life, the French government invested €1.4 billion to clean up the river for the 2024 Olympics, which will be held from July 26 to August 11.

Remember that for 100 years swimming in the Seine was prohibited due to the poor quality of the water. After all efforts to clean it up, on July 17, the mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, swam in the river to show that everything is under control.

However, athletes still have their doubts. In an interview with ESPN, Mexican national team member Martha Sandoval, who will participate in the open marathon test, expressed her concerns:

“Yes, it would make me (I’m afraid). All swimmers are in the same situation. Many don’t want to. I think the Seine River is not so prepared.”
