After a back and forth in deciding on the right-wing candidate for mayor of Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Jair Bolsonaro’s PL allied itself with the PSDB and confirmed its support for Tucano’s pre-candidate, federal deputy Beto Pereira. The change of position in the elections, however, caused frustration among the former president’s allies, who wanted to have him at their side in the electoral campaign.
Senator and former Minister of Agriculture of the Bolsonaro government, Tereza Cristina (PP-MS), is sponsoring the re-election of the current mayor and supporter, Adriane Lopes (PP), and should be on the same platform as Bolsonaro. The plan was already far from being in place in March, when the PL launched the name of former state deputy Rafael Tavares as the party’s pre-candidate in the city. Tavares withdrew from the dispute a month later, and another PL name, Tenente Portela, began to be considered for the elections.
Tereza Cristina has already spoken out about the PL’s refusal to support Adriane Lopes, but she has clarified that it is part of the political game and that she will continue to try to maintain proximity with the former president for the municipal elections. The PP convention is scheduled for August 6 in Campo Grande.
At the beginning of the month, the senator had stated that she would still try to dialogue with Bolsonaro and Valdemar Costa Neto, national president of the PL. The meeting took place between Tereza, Bolsonaro and the former prime minister of the Civil House, the senator and national president of the progressives, Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI).
The meeting was recorded on social media by the former minister. Even without the PP establishing an alliance with the PL in Campo Grande, Ciro Nogueira declared the party’s “total support” for the former president, whom he calls “the most beloved public man in the country.”
Wanted by Statethe senator said the issue was a “turned page” and she would not comment further on the case. Tereza said support for the current mayor remained “as strong as putty,” as they say in her region.
Representative Marcos Pollon (PL), leader of the Proarmas movement, also intended to run in Campo Grande, but was rejected by his own party and removed from the presidency of the PL state government after the party closed its alliance with the PSDB.
In a video posted on social media after learning of the alliance with the Tucans, the MP said that “he cuts his balls, but does not support the PSDB”. Through the consultancy, Pollon stated that so far he does not support anyone for the city hall.
The PL’s alliance with the PSDB in the capital is a nod from Bolsonaro to Governor Eduardo Riedel (PSDB-MS), one of the 13 state chief executives who supported him in the second round of the 2022 presidential election, in which he was defeated.
The dissatisfaction of the former president’s allies also involves Beto Pereira himself, accused by Bolsonaro supporters of having criticized Bolsonaro during the covid-19 pandemic and of having supported the then candidate Simone Tebet (MDB) in the 2022 presidential elections. Local websites claim that the deputy would have even deleted posts with this content seeking the support of PL.
