The singer says she embraced a more imperfect vocal technique to reflect the untrained essence of Lee, her character

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Lady Gaga revealed that his musical interpretation in the film Joker: Madness for Twois something completely new. In the role of Leea version of Harley QuinnGaga distanced herself from her traditional style, and created a voice that reflects the character’s imperfection, as opposed to the technical precision she usually applies to her performances.

Gaga explained that for this role, she worked to make her voice come from the character, rather than her artistic persona. This meant the singer had to embrace a more imperfect vocal technique, to reflect Lee’s untrained essence.

Gaga highlights the difference in technical approach:

For me, there are a lot of bad notes, actually, from Lee. I’m a trained singer, right? So even my breathing was different when I sang as Lee. When I breathe to sing on stage, I have this very controlled way of making sure I’m on pitch and that it’s sustained at the right pace and the right amount of time, but Lee would never know how to do any of that. So it’s like removing the technicality of the whole thing, removing my perceived art form from all of that and being completely in who she is.”

The director Todd Phillips stated that Lady Gaga’s version of Harley Quinn is a reimagining of the artist:

In fact, the interpretation is Gaga’s own, as Harley Quinn, although there are some things that people would find familiar about her from the comics. […] She became the way Charles Manson had girls who idolized him. The way these incarcerated killers have, and people look up to them. There are things about Harley in the movie that were taken from the comics, but we took it and molded it the way we wanted it to be.”

The film, which premieres in October 4th, promises to bring a new perspective on the Gotham universe, with Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix leading the cast. Joker: Madness for Two will be displayed on the Venice Film Festival before it hits theaters.
