Gabi is waiting for the right moment to take on a leading role in the national team

Gabi Moreschi was patient until she could participate in the Olympic Games for the first time. After missing Rio-2016 and Tokyo-2020, she took over the role of the Brazilian women’s handball team to reach Paris-2024. Today, at 30, she is one of the team’s protagonists and a key player in coach Cristiano Rocha’s squad.

“It’s not easy to wait so long. But I think it gave me a different strength and today I feel much more prepared. I’m very happy because I got to the Olympic Games, which was my dream, and I got there the way I wanted to get there: as a goalkeeper for the national team, to be able to help the girls in the best way possible,” said Gabi, star of Brazil’s debut against Spain.

The call has come

Gabi has competed in three World Cups, in 2017, 2019 and 2023, but was excluded from two editions of the Olympics. In Rio-2016, when she was already part of the team, the chosen goalkeepers were Babi Arenhart and Mayssa. Five years later, in Tokyo-2020, she was passed over for the call-up by Babi and Renata Arruda. In Paris, Gabi and Renata were called up.

The two chosen ones have had a great European club season and have been protagonists wherever they have gone. Gabi, in Bietigheim (Germany), was a Champions League runner-up and the goalkeeper with the most saves in the competition, while Renata was the Europa League MVP for Gloria Bistrita (Romania). Legend Babi was called up as a substitute for the selection and was excluded from the final list.

“Cris (Cristiano Rocha) had to choose someone to stay out, but I was very confident in my work. I knew that the commission was also confident, we had a very important exchange recently. I am sure that each of the three If they had chosen, Brazil would be very well represented. We are very good with goalkeepers,” said ParanĂ¡.

Heritage in the door

Because of all this competition, it is clear that Brazil has had a lot of success in the goal position in recent generations. Starting with the historic Chana Masson, passing through Mayssa Pessoa and Babi, protagonists of the conquest of the historic 2013 world title, up to Renata Arruda and Gabi Moreschi, current starters of the team.

“Brazil has a history of sensational goalkeepers and I am very honored to wear this jersey and be in goal. We have so many significant names in the history of handball. For me it is an honor to share the goal with Renata (Arruda) and with Babi (Arenhart) and all the others who have passed,” said Gabi, who is from MaringĂ¡ and started playing handball at the age of 13.
