Every Star Wars fan has dreamed of this one day: before starring in The Phantom Menace, Ewan McGregor had this huge privilege.

At the end of the 90s, there was real excitement in the Star Wars fan community: 15 years after Return of the Jedi, George Lucas was preparing three new episodes that were supposed to explore the past of his heroes and the origin of Darth Vader.

At the time, for all the viewers who grew up watching the adventures of Luke, Leia and Han Solo, the luckiest young man in the world was named Ewan McGregor.

Thanks to Trainspotting, this British actor of around 26 was actually chosen by George Lucas to play one of the saga’s most legendary heroes: Obi-Wan Kenobi.

But as if playing a young Jedi opposite Liam Neeson wasn’t enough, McGregor was also offered the experience every Star Wars fan must dream of one day: choosing his own lightsaber.

“It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”
