For more than 15 years, the 2007 video game BioShock has been adapted in Hollywood. In 2008, Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski was approached to direct it, before seeing the project fall apart. Eventually, years later, Netflix took over. Good news for fans: the adaptation is still relevant.
This is announced by producer Roy Lee Deadline. Director Francis Lawrence – to whom we owe The Hunger Games – wants to direct. Only a few minor changes are expected. Originally planned as a massive, big-budget project, the film is set to be much more modest here, and that’s partly because of Netflix.
“The new policy reduced budgetsThe producer explains. So we’re moving towards a much smaller version. It’s going to be much more personal as opposed to a more epic project.”
It’s been a few years since the streaming giant drastically reduced spending on original productions. BioShock seems to be a direct influence. It remains to be seen what form this adaptation will take and when it will go into production. Producer Roy Lee does not provide any information on this topic.
The film is written by Michael Green – who is signing a new series Blade Runner with Michelle Yeoh, coming soon to Prime Video. The first synopsis is as follows: “Jack must survive the hostile environment of Rapture using weapons and plasmids that grant him superhuman powers such as telekinesis or the ability to electrocute him from a distance..”
BioShock, coming soon to Netflix.
