Marvel Studios promised a surprise-filled panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, and they delivered. The next film from Vigadors will star Robert Downey Jr. (yes, Iron Man) as Doctor Doom, the main villain of the Multiverse saga. Plus, the Russo brothers, directors of Captain America: Winter Soldier, Civil War, and, of course, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, are back for the next two films about Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The casting of Downey Jr. took everyone by surprise. Will Tony Stark, a character the actor has played for a decade at Marvel, have any connection to Doctor Doom? Well, we’ll find out in May and in 2026 in Avengers: Doomsday (no official title yet). This is yet another change announced; until then, the fifth film in the team would have been subtitled Kang Dynasty.
Robert Downey Jr. to Play Doctor Doom After Jonathan Majors’ Departure of Kang
The change reflects the departure of Jonathan Majors. The actor was convicted of domestic violence and will no longer play the villain Kang, who until then would have been the antagonist of Avengers 5. The character appeared in the series Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Loki. The departure is also expected to change the story.
The sixth Avengers film, scheduled for release in May 2027, a year after Doomsday, remains Secret Wars, which is expected to adapt one of Marvel’s most famous story arcs in the comics, when different universes collide in a great war.
