The Brazilian surfed a perfect wave and was just a few tenths away from achieving the highest score in the sport
The second day of surfing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games ended brilliantly this Sunday (28) in Teahupo’o, Tahiti. Brazilian fans stayed up late to watch a true wave show by Filipe Toledo and the athlete from Sao Paulo made history at the top.
After Australian Jack Robinson scored an incredible 9.87 in the repechage against Lucca Mesinas, it was Toledo’s turn to write his name in Teahupo’o’s memory with two absolutely spectacular tubes in the final heat of the leg.
The Brazilian did everything he could in the wave, stayed deep in the barrel and came out at the perfect moment. Even so, the judges only rated the maneuver at 7.33. Undaunted, Toledo responded to the controversial note with another fantastic performance and, this time, there was no stopping him. The two-time world surfing champion heard the number 9.67 announced and was very excited about the result.
Filipe Toledo’s finish in the round of 16 serves to answer questions that have been raised about the surfer’s ability to compete in Tahiti. It also raised the question of what observers consider a perfect wave at Teahupo’o. Now the Brazilian is preparing to take to the water again this Monday to compete in the round of 16 of the Surfing Olympics.
