It’s just one step from the page to the screen… which the quintessential Garfield, despite his characteristic laziness, has already done many times on both the small and big screens. This summer, on July 31 to be exact, the greediest and laziest cat returns to the cinema for action-packed adventures. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about the origins of this character who has delighted readers and viewers for over 45 years!
A cat in a dog world!
Before the theatrical release of the animated film Garfield – A Hero Despite Himself, Jim Davis, the “father” of the famous indoor cat, spoke about the creation of this extraordinary cat. What if instead of a lazy, self-centered cat, Garfield was a dog? It is impossible! It was because he was tired of only seeing dogs as the stars of comics that Jim Davis decided to shake up the codes to portray his imperfect hero.
“I’ve seen so many dog adventures, each one smarter than the last: Snoopy, Marmaduke, Fred Bassett, etc. I’ve always loved cats, and I’m much better at it, so I said to myself, since dogs are so good, maybe it’s time to make an innovation with them. he explains.
The most human animal?
If its choice has been among the most popular pets for many years, it is also thanks to the many similarities that can be drawn between it and humans. “Attributing human thoughts and feelings to cats is quite easy. Garfield is actually a man disguised as a cat. And it is certain that Garfield’s longevity is due to the fact that his millions of fans identify with him and above all… with his weaknesses.
Indeed, that’s why we love it. Garfield is lazy, hates Mondays and spiders, and seems to have one passion in life: food, especially lasagna. So many character traits and interests that make him a fun and unique character that audiences can easily identify with…and grow attached to!

A true reflection of what can sometimes be unpleasant in each of us, it above all helps us laugh. “Cats are just like us! I hold up a mirror to the reader with a humorous twist. We always feel guilty about eating too much, not exercising, and sleeping too much. Garfield solves our guilt by making it all fun and enjoyable.” Jim Davis continues.
It’s time for an adventure!
Back on the screens today, Garfield – Hero, despite himself, the famous indoor cat has not finished entertaining the public, and he has not aged a bit in his almost 50 years of existence. Even better, viewers will first get to discover her at a young age, still a child, and witness her meeting John.
After finding his missing father, Vicky, streetwise street cat Garfield is forced to leave his comfortable life behind to help him pull off a heist that’s as risky as it is funny. In this crazy adventure, Garfield is of course accompanied by his most loyal friend, Odie. If Jim Davis wanted to put a cat in the spotlight, he decided to do it with man’s best friend.

In the original version, actor Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, Parks and Recreation) voices the famous character, and in France, we meet Kian Khojandi in the dubbing booth. An exercise the Brief star knows well, as he notably played the robot Baymax in New Heroes and recently played one of the heroes in the animated film Zak & Wowo: The Legend of Lendarys.
