From haunted house movies to movie theaters, there are hundreds. So how do you stand out? French director duo Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury found a solution: setting their scene underwater. This is the concept behind The Deep House, which tells the story of an American couple specializing in urbex – urban exploration – who go deep to visit a house subject to many urban legends.
If a film isn’t free of flaws, it’s impossible to take away its creativity and generosity in horror. Fans of the genre looking for a slightly crazy story should not be disappointed. In the past, the directors – with Beatrice Dulles helming the film – have already discussed the Haunted House theme with Leavid. Fascinated by the underwater sequence, they wanted to mix the two to arrive at an innovative concept that had never been done before.
Shooting in real conditions
The entire film was shot underwater. “We really wanted to do this side, which is both anxiety-inducing but also very poetic and dreamlike, underwater.“, explains Julien More to AlloCiné. The ghosts that inhabit the house are played by free divers who did not have oxygen bottles.

“The ghosts had to stand up straight and walk as if the gravity was the same as outsidecontinues Julien More. This was also a big challenge because obviously there is no attachment point underwater. So we had to install towing systems with nylon lines and trains that wheeled them to move them underwater.“
Two actors, Camille Rowe and James Jagger – son of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger – trained with two great divers, Justin Charbonnier and Thibaut Raub. Filming was very intense and the acting duo could spend 9 to 10 hours a day underwater.
The Deep House is now available on Netflix.
