Actor Brandon Lee and cinematographer Halyna Hutchins tragically died during filming after being hit by gunfire.

During filming of the reboot The Raven (2024), starring Bill Skarsgard (Eric) and FKA Twigs (Shelly Webster), the director Rupert Sanders banned firearms on set following incidents that resulted in the actor’s deaths Brandon Lee and the director of photography Halyna Hutchins.

Lee died during the recordings ofThe Raven original, released in 1994, after a bullet got stuck in a prop gun that failed and hit him in the stomach. Already Hutchins was hit, by accident, by Alec Baldwin in the scene of Rust – and the director Joel Souza was seriously injured.

During an interview with Variety, Sanders explained the precautions taken in the new film, which arrived in Brazilian cinemas this Thursday, the 22nd. “Safety is the number one priority. Film sets are very dangerous,” he said. “There are fast-moving cars with cranes attached to the top. There are stuntmen falling down stairs.”

Even walking around a set at night with rain machines and lights – you’re working in an industrial environment. So it’s dangerous. You need to be safe.

“On the first day I met with the special effects department and the gunsmith, who was great, in Prague. They were very concerned about safety. They follow all the same guidelines as the military when dealing with weapons, but I didn’t want to risk that,” the filmmaker recalled.

Right away, Rupert Sanders spoke about the decision to ban firearms on set: “It means we didn’t have a gun that could have a live round or a blank round anywhere near it, so no projectile could get in. They’re all firearms.” Airsoftand some of them are just rubber or metal decoys that are functional but have no firing mechanism.”

“The beauty of Airsoft is that the slide of a Glock “It still moves backwards, but then you have to add the casing. You have to add a snout and smoke, but that was a price worth paying,” he continued. “It took a lot of money out of my limited visual effects budget, but it was worth it.”

The visual effects on this film were mostly in-camera. We were mostly a location shoot with set extensions. So you have to balance where you spend your money when you don’t have a huge budget to do visual effects. But for me, it was a very worthwhile expenditure for the safety and comfort of everyone on this project.
