Lula government allocates 3.9 billion reais for professional, scientific and technological education

The main goal is to build 100 new campuses of federal institutions by 2026.

The President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva presented on Friday 23, in a meeting with the leaders of federal institutions in the capital São Paulo, the government’s plan to invest 3.9 billion reais in professional, scientific and technological education.

The meeting, held on the campus of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of São Paulo (IFSP), aimed to present the PAC investments aimed at professional and technological education. Lula was accompanied by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin and Ministers Camilo Santana (Education), Paulo Teixeira (Agrarian Development) and Fernando Haddad (Finance).

By 2026, the federal government is expected to invest R$ 3.9 billion in expanding and consolidating the federal network of professional, scientific and technological education, including federal institutes, federal centers of technological education and Colégio Pedro II, a federal agency in the Ministry of Education.

The main objective is the construction of 100 new campuses of federal institutions during the period, generating 140 thousand new enrollments, mostly integrated technical courses at secondary level. For professional and technological education, in the State of São Paulo alone, R$ 441.2 million are planned, of which R$ 141.2 million in work in existing IFSP units.

Another R$ 300 million will be allocated for the opening of twelve new campuses in the state by 2026.

Friday’s announcement comes amid criticism of the Lula administration over the transfer of resources to existing federal education units. In a meeting Thursday 22 with the Ministry of Education, the rectors of federal universities expressed concern that the budget is insufficient to close the institutions’ accounts in 2024, as the situation has been exacerbated by recent blockades.

“We continue to wait and have a great desire to achieve a real increase in the budget so that we can begin to correct the asymmetries that we face internally,” said the president of the National Association of Directors of Federal Higher Education Institutions (Andifes), Rector José Daniel Diniz Melo (UFRN).
