Once upon a time there was The Crow

Rupert Sanders’ Crow is a new adaptation of James O’Barry’s iconic comic book, which was brought to the screen back in 1994 by Alex Proyas. The feature film was followed by several sequels: City of Angels with Vincent Perez (1997), Salvation with Eric Mabus and Kirsten Dunst (2000), and Wicked Prayer with Edward Furlong and David Boreanaz (2005). Not forgetting the late 1990s TV series hosted by Mark Dacascos. However, this version is the first to be directly adapted from the original film.

The role of film directors

Before Rupert Sanders was finally chosen to direct this remake of The Crow, many filmmakers were approached. In December 2008, Stephen Norrington was the first to introduce himself as the director of this new version. After a difficult manufacturing process, it jumps on board. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, F. Javier Gutierrez and Corinne Hardy.

Note that this is not the first time that Rupert Sanders has taken on an adaptation, as he has already directed Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, and Ghost in the Shell (2017), based on it. Manga of the same name.

Many stars are considered

The list of actors who have played the tragic and vengeful hero of The Crow is long. Among them, we can mention Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum, Alexander Skarsgård, Jack Huston, Robert Pattinson, James McAvoy, Tom Hiddleston, Sam Witwer, Ryan Gosling, Nicholas Hoult, Luke Evans, Jack O’Connell and especially Jason Momoa (in the project called The Crow Reborn).

Bill Skarsgård, famous for playing the killer clown Pennywise in the blockbuster films, eventually inherited the role.

personal inspirations

In this new adaptation, the protagonist is decked out in a mullet and carries numerous tattoos, unlike the graphic novel and original film. In this, director Rupert Sanders stated that he was simply inspired by himself:

“This look was me in the ’90s when we were hanging out in London, mixed with modern influences like singers Post Malone and Lil Peep. I hope people who are 19 today will look at it and say: this guy is us.”

“This image shows the beginning of his transformation into Crow. This is the moment when we realize that something bad is happening.”

First steps in cinema

While she appeared in Israeli filmmaker Alma Harrell’s biopic Honey Boy, singer FKA Twigs played her first major role in The Crow. Note that Jessica Brown Findlay and Kristen Stewart (who, like FKA Twigs, was in a relationship with Robert Pattinson) were considered for the role.
