Leão do Pici takes the lead in the Brasileirão at the end of the 24th round
Fortaleza is the new leader of the Brasileirão. After the end of the 24th round of the championship, Leão do Pici jumped to the top of the standings by beating Corinthians 1-0, in Castelão. In the era of the points race, it is the second time that the Ceará team is in the lead.
Fortaleza has been a force to be reckoned with in recent years in Brazilian football, especially since the arrival of coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda in 2021. Before him, the Ceará team had already been on the rise, under the guidance of Rogério Ceni, since 2018.
For most of the decade, Fortaleza was in the third division of the Brazilian championship. However, after eight seasons in Série C, Leão ended the 2010s on a high. Following a rapid rise, Tricolor do Pici moved up to Série B in 2017, and returned to Série A after 13 years, becoming Série B champions.
Furthermore, after winning the Copa do Nordeste, Fortaleza completed ten consecutive years winning at least one title per season.
In the 2024 season, Fortaleza is still in contention for the title of the Copa Sudamericana, a competition in which it finished second last season.
Fortaleza’s leadership in the Brasileirão is not unprecedented. In 2021, after beating Internacional 5-1, Fortaleza jumped to the top of the standings in the second round, remaining first until the fourth round. In common with the current situation, Yago Pikachu’s goals in the duels that brought the tricolors to the top of the standings, in addition to the presence of Vojvoda in the technical area.
Fortaleza also achieved their goal of becoming champion of Brazil. In 1960 they lost the Taça Brasil title in the final against Palmeiras. In the 1968 edition they came second against Botafogo.
Leão’s next match in the national championship is against Botafogo itself, in a duel that is worth the partial leadership of the competition. On Saturday (31), the teams will face each other at 9 pm (Brasilia time), in Rio de Janeiro.
