It’s gonna be a long night: What are the top Netflix shows?

At the Monte Baruca psychiatric prison, on December 24, a group of armed men surrounded the complex and cut off all communication with the outside world. Their goal is to capture Simon Lago, a dangerous serial killer, but the prison director refuses to hand him over.

The Night Will Be Long, a TV series created by Victor Sierra and Jose Morais with Luis Callejo, Alberto Amman, Jose Luis García Pérez… available on Netflix

It has almost become a recipe on Netflix: Spanish series + thriller = guaranteed success. And The Night Will Be Long is no exception. This action thriller pits two groups against each other: armed men determined to capture Simon Lago (Luis Callejo), a dangerous serial killer, and Hugo (Alberto Amani), a prison director who refuses to obey and prepares to resist the attack. And if the guards deliver the killer, the attack will be over in minutes.

After La Casa de Papel and the movie Mortal Cold, it seems that Netflix Spain has taken a liking to locking up its characters and taking them to extremes. Exit la Fabrique de la Monnaie, La Nuit seralongue has a less elegant decor, that of a mental prison, with the faux-distant air of Batman’s famous Arkham Asylum.

In this desolate place full of antagonists, the line between good and evil is constantly blurred. But in reality the characters have a relatively simple course of action. It is described by Hugo, the prison director, who says:Either you die a hero or you live long enough to become a villain.

Is it the case of this director who refuses to hand over one of the detainees? His decision, seemingly noble, costs many lives, despite many justifications. And during this time, groups begin to form between attackers, guards, and inmates, upsetting the prison’s already fragile balance.

All of this leads to a constant debate about who makes the wisest decisions in an increasingly hostile and desperate environment, while reinforcing the sense that there is a larger conspiracy than meets the eye. The series follows the same recipe as the previous one produced on the other side of the Pyrenees: we seem to develop a taste for convoluted stories and claims.
