Social Network X Goes Offline in Brazil on Moraes’ Order

The platform is blocked until a legal representative is appointed

Billionaire Elon Musk’s social network X has started going offline across Brazil.

Since midnight this Saturday (31), users can no longer access the old Twitter, following a decision by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), due to the company’s refusal to appoint a legal representative at the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Country.

The only way to get into X would be through a VPN (virtual private network), but Moraes also imposed a daily fine of R$50,000 on anyone who attempted to bypass the block using this tool.

This is the culmination of the crisis involving the minister who is leading several investigations against the Bolsonarist far right in the STF and in Musk’s social network, who has already accused the magistrate of being a “dictator” for having ordered the suspension of profiles accused of attacks on democracy.

On August 17, X announced the closure of its offices in Brazil and denounced alleged “censorship” by imposing fines on the platform for ignoring court orders.

“We are deeply saddened to have been forced to make this decision. The responsibility lies solely with Alexandre de Moraes. His actions are incompatible with a democratic government,” the platform said at the time.

In response, last Wednesday (28) the minister gave X a 24-hour deadline to appoint a legal representative in Brazil, as required by national legislation, under penalty of suspension of the platform.

Reacting to the blockade, Musk, a Bolsonaro ally who is being investigated by the STF in the digital militias probe, called Moraes a “pseudo-judge” and said the minister was “destroying” freedom of expression in the country.
