Felipe Gustavo Takes 2nd Place at SLS APEX 3 in San Diego

Without Rayssa Leal, but with Pâmela Rosa, Filipe Mota and Felipe Gustavo, Brazil was present in force at the Street League Skateboarding (SLS) APEX 3, in San Diego. The Brazilian highlight there was Felipe Gustavo, who finished 2nd in the men’s Street Skate competition. The party was made by Japan, who won the tournament in both seeds.

Rayssa Leal was unable to attend the stage due to a severe case of influenza. Pâmela Rosa was therefore the only representative of the country in the competition. In this tournament, athletes compete in unique maneuvers. Each skater has seven maneuver opportunities, the three highest scores count towards the final score, and successfully executed maneuvers cannot be repeated.

In the test, Pâmela scored 5.7 on her first attempt, 6.3 on her second, and 7.8 on her fifth. In the others, she was unable to complete the maneuvers. The Brazilian scored 19.8 and placed 5th overall among the seven competitors. The big winner was Japanese Yumeka Oda, who scored 24.5 points.

Runner up

In the men’s category, Felipe Gustavo was the highlight for Brazil. He entered the tournament as a replacement for American Nyjah Huston. In the competition, he started strong and made his first two attempts, receiving marks of 8.0 and 8.4. He then made a mistake three times until he got the third trick right, receiving his highest score of 8.9. Adding 25.3, he went into his final attempt needing an 8.9 to overtake leader Netsuke, from Japan. However, the Brazilian did not complete the maneuver and ended up in second place. Finally, Filipe Mota finished in 5th place, with 15 points.

In addition to SLS APEX 3, the SLS Championship Tour will have two more stops before the SLS Super Crown, the world final, will be held in Brazil in December for the third consecutive year. In October, the world’s street skateboarding elite descends on Australia for SLS Sydney. In November, the destination is Japan, with SLS Tokyo. Both stops made their debut on the SLS Championship Tour last season.
