Johnny Depp’s attorneys ask the judge to leave the jury verdict intact

Actress Amber Heard has asked for the annulment of the sentence which has decided that she will have to pay more than 10 million dollars to the actor

Johnny Depp’s attorneys are asking a Virginia judge to leave his $ 10 million libel trial intact after ex-wife Amber Heard’s attorneys called for the verdict overturned for a variety of reasons, including a apparent misidentified relationship involving one of the jurors.

In court documents filed Monday, Depp’s attorneys contest Heard’s team’s arguments that the jury’s verdict was meaningless and unfounded. They also say that the complaints about the juror’s identity are irrelevant.

Last month, a Fairfax civil jury ruled in favor of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard will have to pay the plaintiff $ 10.35 million in case of defamation began after the actress wrote a Washington Post article in 2018 about domestic violence. Remember the case here.

The jury also awarded Heard $ 2 million for finding out she had been defamed by one of Depp’s attorneys after calling her allegations a hoax.

Heard’s attorneys filed motions earlier this month asking the judge to overturn verdicts on a variety of legal theories.

On Monday 11, Depp’s lawyers presented their answer. They argue that there was nothing inconsistent in the jury’s conclusion in their favor. They said the jury-filled form allowed them to be very specific about which claims were defamatory and that the verdict made sense when looking at the specific claims the jury cited.

As for the confusion over the juror’s identity, Depp’s lawyers say it’s too late for Heard’s team to object. According to court records, a summons was sent to a 77-year-old man. But the man who answered in his place was his 52-year-old son, who has the same name and lives at the same address.

Depp’s attorneys argue that if Heard’s team had any doubts, they should have spoken at the time because it was evident that the man he served was not 77, although court documents described him as such.

Judge Penney Azcarate has not yet indicated whether he intends to hold a hearing to hear the arguments on the requests to overturn the verdict.

The verdict in favor of Depp in Virginia came about two years after a similar trial in the UK in which Depp is suing a British tabloid after being described as a “wife beater”. The judge in that case ruled in favor of the newspaper in 2020 after discovering that Heard was telling the truth in descriptions of his abuse.

Jurors in the Virginia case were not told that the judge in the British case had ruled against Depp.
