Ridley Scott says he’s fine with Russell Crowe ‘as long as he doesn’t complain’ about Gladiator 2

After 24 years since the release of Gladiator (2000), the classic film will have a sequel, starring Paul Mescal and directed by Ridley Scott

One of the greatest directors in the history of Hollywood, Ridley Scott worked with several famous actors throughout his career, such as Russell Crowe. In fact, the two have a great relationship – as long as the actor “doesn’t complain” about Gladiator 2.

It is worth remembering how Crowe played the protagonist of the classic Gladiatorreleased on May 19, 2000 in Brazilian cinemas. For his work as Maximus Decimus Meridiushe even won the Oscar of Best Actor. However, as the character died, he did not appear in the sequel.

In recent years, the actor has made some somewhat controversial statements about the sequel, titled Gladiator 2, whose cast includes names such as Paul Mescal (Lucius), Denzel Washington (Macrinus), Peter Pascal (Marcus Acacius), Joseph Quinn (The Emperor Caracalla), Connie Nielsen (Lucilla), among others. For example, he appeared “not at all” interested and “a little uncomfortable,” in addition to getting tired of answering questions about the new entry in the franchise.

According to information from NME, Ridley Scott was asked why he did not consult Russell Crowe about the sequence. “I think [Russell Crowe] “He’s still one of the best actors in the world, and I think we have a good relationship. I hope so. As long as he doesn’t start complaining about how he wasn’t consulted,” he replied. “Why would I do that? He’s dead!”

A few years after the premiere of the first Gladiatorthe director even presented a “reasonable” idea for a sequel to the DreamWorksbut “never went any further.” The project in question had a script written by the singer Nick Caveand the narrative followed Maximus escaping purgatory on a mission to kill Christ.
