“Gays have no say here”: Student denounces racist insults and homophobia in Rio school

A 14-year-old student reported being subjected to racist and homophobic insults by classmates at a school in Rio de Janeiro. According to the incident, the attacks began last year through a WhatsApp group. The information is from the newspaper The globe.

The teenager is in eighth grade and studies at Colégio pH. The victim’s aunt, Sheila de Paula, explained to the newspaper that the case was registered at the police station on August 9. Since then, almost a month after the formal incident, the school has only changed the victim’s class.

“I don’t think this is the only measure that the school will have to take. The attacks are recurrent, my nephew has lost the will to study. At the beginning of this year he wanted to change schools and that’s when we found out about the attacks. Since nothing was done effectively, we turned to the police,” said the aunt.

Among the exchanges of messages, for example, one student allegedly admitted to being “the biggest homophobe that exists with pride,” after calling the victim a “faggot.” They also sent a photo with the phrase: “Gays have no say here.” As for the racial slur, in addition to the laughter and prejudiced looks, the victim was also called “black” and “monkey.”

Colégio pH informed the vehicle that it “rejects any discriminatory attitude and any action in this regard is not in accordance with the values ​​and guidelines adopted by the school. In this sense, the school regrets what happened in a WhatsApp group of students.”

Furthermore, the institution reported that it investigated the incident and “met with the people involved and their families in order to ensure all necessary measures so that respect and equality always prevail, treating the matter with all the seriousness it deserves.” The school also specifies that it “applied the sanctions and adopted the necessary educational measures.”
