Rating 4 out of 5: This is one of the best novels of all time and Glenn Close’s best movie!

One of the most talented but also the most underrated actors of his generation, Glenn Close currently stars in The Deliverance, which is number one on Netflix this week. In this film, adapted from the news, the American actor looks incredible and gives a new, top-notch performance.

Glenn Close’s career is almost flawless, just missing an Oscar. The latter was nominated eight times, including four times in the Best Actress category. This was especially the case in 1989 for his performance in the film, which AlloCiné Internet users considered the best (rated 4 out of 5).

It’s Stephen Frears’ Les Liaisons Dangereuses, voted by the public as the best movie starring Glenn Close. The American actor lends his character to Machiavelli’s Marquis de Merte in this adaptation of Coderlos de Laclos’ masterpiece.

The cult novel has been adapted many times for film

For those who didn’t read the novel during their studies, Les Liaisons Dangereuses tells the story of a bet Merteuil makes with the Viscount de Valmont (John Malkovich). He is asked to seduce Cécile de Volangé (Uma Thurman) to get revenge on the Marquis’ former lover, who is now engaged to a younger woman.

If Valmont completes his mission, Merteuil will agree to favor the libertine. But at the same time, the latter falls madly in love with Madame de Tourvel (Michelle Pfeiffer), a budding romance that will cause the Marquis to become jealous and petty. This romantic crossover, which started as a simple game of seduction, gradually takes a dramatic turn…

Stephen Frears’ film is generally cited as one of the best adaptations of the novel. Which is saying something, because Les Liaisons Dangereuses has been adapted for cinema many times, both in France (by Roger Vadim, in particular in 1959) and abroad. A modernized version was released under the name Sexe Intentions and was a huge hit with young moviegoers.

The best on-screen portrayal of the Marquis?

Many prestigious actors have contributed their features to the Marquis de Merte over time. Jeanne Moreau (in Vadim’s film) and Catherine Deneuve (in Jose Diane’s mini-series), as well as Annette Bening (in Valmont), Zhang Ziyi (in Dangerous Liaisons) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (in Intentions of Sex) are notable.

Glenn Close’s performance is what sticks out most in the minds of moviegoers. Managing to find the perfect balance between the character’s sensuality and Machiavellianism, the American actor gives a prestigious performance. His chemistry with John Malkovich is also one of the strengths of this adaptation, masterfully directed by Stephen Frears.

The adaptation of Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close is also available for purchase and rental on most video on demand platforms. His new movie The Deliverance is currently number one on Netflix.
