Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, asked on Friday whether Russian President Vladimir Putin’s declared support for U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris was serious or a joke, said citizens would have to find out for themselves.
Putin told an interviewer on Thursday that he preferred Kamala to Donald Trump, citing her “infectious” laughter as a reason why she might be less likely to penalize Russia with sanctions.
He smiled as he made the remark – one of several seemingly provocative comments he made during the US campaign.
Asked if Putin was serious, Peskov told reporters: “When asked about international affairs, he makes comments. As for his tone, interested people abroad should try to interpret it.”
The White House said Thursday that Putin should stop commenting on the November election.
Peskov said that Putin’s priority was Russia’s well-being and that “American affairs cannot be, and are not, a concern at the top of the president’s agenda.”
