Elderly man dies after falling for ‘Good Night, Cinderella’ scam from women he met on dating app

The old man was buried as a ‘natural death’ and only later the situation came to light; understanding the case that happened on the coast of SP

A 74-year-old man has died after falling victim to the “Goodnight Cinderella” scam by two women he met on a dating app, in Praia Grande, on the coast of São Paulo. He had a barbecue with the two at his home and was drugged. They stole personal items such as a television and a mobile phone and left them there. Three days later he was found lying on the floor of his home, was rescued and did not survive, having been buried as a case of “natural death” – because it was believed his death was due to a fall. Until his family noticed items in the deceased’s home and contacted the police again, who investigated the case and revealed the scam.

According to information from the Civil Police obtained from EarthThis was the beginning of what they called a “near-perfect crime.” The women chose as their victim an older man who lived alone and had little contact with his family. They approached him, implying that they were interested in a romantic relationship.

What happened, according to the police, is that the suspects put ‘Buonanotte Cenerentola’, in a very strong concentration, in the old man’s drink during the barbecue. He lost consciousness and woke up when he was alone. Since he was still drugged, due to the substances he had ingested, he fell in the bathroom and remained there asking for help until a family member, who had noticed his disappearance on social media, found him. Initially, they did not connect his death to the old man’s encounter with the women.

The elderly man was rescued by the Mobile Emergency Service (SAMU) and taken to an Emergency Unit (UPA), but died two days later.

Until the elderly man’s relatives, still not understanding what had happened, noticed that several of the deceased’s objects had disappeared from his home and called the Civil Police. Investigating the case, the women were identified and the agents discovered that the two were buying barbecue at a market in Praia Grande before the crime.

The investigation was concluded on Thursday 5th. In this process, the coastal agents went to Campinas to execute three search and seizure warrants. During the investigation, one of the suspects was arrested while the other is still at large. The elderly man’s belongings found in the home of one of the women were recovered.

In addition to the Praia Grande crime, the two women had already carried out a similar scam in Araçoiaba da Serra, a town near Sorocaba.
