Qualifiers: Peru and Colombia draw in Lima

The Peruvians take the lead, but suffer a 1-1 draw. They remain last and without a win in the tournament. Third place for the Colombians

It was not this time that Peru achieved its first victory in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. This Friday (9/6), at the National Stadium in Lima, for the seventh round of the competition, the Peruvians even took the lead against Colombia, with Callens. But they conceded a 1-1 draw, Luis Díaz scored the Colombian goal.

Peru remains at the bottom of the qualifying standings, in tenth place, with only three points. Colombia has 13 points. As a result, they lose the chance to conquer second place, which goes to Uruguay (who drew 0 with Paraguay on Friday). Argentina is in the lead, with 18 points.

Peru and Colombia, goals in the final phase

With a much more technical team than Peru, Colombia had complete control of the ball in the first half, with 70% possession. Thus, Peru had some direct connections to try to reach the goal through Advíncula, their left back. In this boring first half, the Colombians suffer from slowness and empty shots. Peru regretted a goal by Lapadula, well disallowed, and a header by Valera on which goalkeeper Vargas made a good save.

The second half was much livelier. Especially because Peru scored in the 22nd minute, when Peña, after badly taking a corner, had a second chance and crossed again. Valera missed the shot, but defender Callens did not. Peru 1-0. The party was great. But it also forced Peru to retreat and fight against an unhappy Colombia in the final. But that was until the 36th minute. James (substitute at half-time) takes a corner, Durán scores and Luiz Diáz, almost on the line, sends the ball into the net. All the same.
