The prestigious Italian film festival, the Venice Film Festival, has announced its decision and crowned the winners of the 2024 edition, led by the President of the Official Competition Jury, Isabelle Huppert. The Golden Lion, Mostra’s highest award, was presented to The Room Door by Pedro Almodovar. The film starring Julianne Moores, Tilda Swinton and John Turturro, which follows the poor creatures of Yorgos Lanthimos, does not yet have a release date in France.
The Grand Jury Prize was awarded to Italian director Maura Delpero’s feature film Vermiglio or The Mountain Bride, which follows last year’s winner Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s No Evil.
On the acting side, Nicole Kidman won the Volpe Award for Best Actress for her role in Babygirl. The Wolpe Trophy for Best Actor went to Vincent Lindon for his performance in “Playing with Fire.” Paul Kircher received the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Most Promising Actor for his role in Their Children After Them.
The Silver Lion for Best Director went to Brady Corbett for The Brutalist. The filmmaker was replaced by Matteo Garrone, winner of the 2023 edition with his film I, Captain.
The prize for the best screenplay was awarded to the duo Murillo Hauser and Heitor Lorega for the film I’m Still Here. They replaced Pablo Larraín at El Conde. The jury’s special prize for the film April was also awarded to the Georgian director and screenwriter Dea Kulumbegashvili.
France, which submitted 4 films to the competition – After them their children by Zoran and Ludovic Bucherma, Play with fire By Muriel and Delphine Cullen, Trois amis d’Emmanuel Mouret and Jeunesse (Le Retour), which completes Wang Bing’s trilogy dedicated to contemporary Chinese youth – therefore does not leave this ceremony empty-handed, but with two prizes awarded to two actors at the summit: one. which begins Paul Kircherand the other confirmed Vincent Lyndon.
As a reminder, at the opening ceremony of the festival, Sigourney Weaver received an honorary Golden Lion for her entire career. The same goes for Australian director Peter Weir (Master and Commander, The Circle of Dead Poets, The Truman Show), who was also honored on September 2 for his lifetime achievement.
