There was a time when Netflix relied heavily on various offerings only to leave fans disappointed with horrendous cancellations. Last August marked the fifth anniversary of one of the most painful decisions for fans of The OA: not giving an ending to the beloved series.
Created by British Marling and Zall Batmanglie, the show, starring the former’s sister Jason Isaacs, won over audiences with its desire to present a fascinating mystery that moves between science fiction, fantasy and the supernatural. If five seasons had been planned (and sold to the platform), there would have been only two in the end.
In August 2019, after several months of no news, Netflix canceled it OA At the end of its 2nd season, it leaves the fans, creators and cast speechless.
Five seasons or movies
Even Jason Isaacs Continues to hope that the five-season plan that the creators of the series had can continue. Last January, the actor broached the subject after praising the work of Marling and Batmanglij (via Collider).
“They laid all the foundations and then fleshed out all the actors, and that’s why I think there’s never been anything like it. I have never seen anything like it. I really liked it, and besides, even though it was canceled after season two, they have all five seasons in mind. And if you’ve seen season 2, you know where we left off, we can pick it up anytime, we’d be willing to do it if we could.“

“My head was spinning with what was going to happen, how I was going to do it and what it would look like. Then, of course, it wasn’t me. It’s inside the Jason Isaacs version of Happy, in the world they were going to create, so there were all kinds of fantastic possibilities for that. And this is a world in which Jason Isaacs is married to Britt Marling, among others, which many thought was true. They were just very clever at playing with those expectations and coming up with things that were interesting and intellectual but also moving and human. And they were constantly changing the rules of the game. Season 2 was very different from Season 1 and Season 3 was also very different from Season 2. I’m sorry to everyone, and especially to me, that we can’t see it.“
Fans continued to come up with theories about what would happen next. In turn, Netflix at the time offered the creators to end the series with… a movie. To which they refused, saying that it would be difficult to arrange everything with such a small frame.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last year, Zal Batmanglij mentioned topic: “The ending of OA was a surprise to me, but they tried to start us with a movie and we said no. Therefore, I did not feel offended by it; I was more confused. If you’re Netflix, why not end up with more than just a recap? Why not wrap it up with a third season? That would require us to put together and package all three seasons, and then you could go to Max or Hulu or somewhere else.“
He added:You can do a lot with it if it’s complete. This idea with all these unfinished house platforms is garbage, I just don’t see the economic benefit of it. It is much better to have a finished product, then license it and make money from it for the next 10-20 years. So we didn’t suffer because of it…“
Is it possible to continue one day? Only time will tell.
