Brazil beats Argentina to finish second in South American Championship

Bitter defeat! The dream of the 28th South American women’s basketball title has been postponed to Brazil. This Saturday (7), the Brazilian team lost again against Argentina and finished second. This time the defeat came with a score of 84 to 76. The ‘hermanas’ have thus won the third title in history, the second in the last three editions.

The game

The match represented a chance for a possible rematch for the Brazilians, as Brazil lost to Argentina in the opening of the South American Championship, by 75 to 48. The Brazilian team, in fact, seemed capable of recovering from the grand final, dominating the first quarter by 29 to 20. However, the team suffered a “blackout” in the following two periods, losing the advantage and arriving at the last quarter with a 62 to 62 tie.

In the last ten minutes Argentina played better and was ahead for almost the entire time. Brazil even managed to react and tied the game at 76-76 with less than 2 minutes left on the clock. However, the Brazilian team was unable to score more points and ended up losing the game.

Brazil continues to be the most successful team in the South American women’s basketball tournament, with 27 titles in 38 editions. In addition, the team has only fallen off the podium twice in history, in 1948 and 1950. However, the super hegemony finally seems to be threatened by a worthy rival. Even so, it is worth remembering that Brazil does not compete in the tournament with the best possible team. This is because the country’s biggest stars, who play in the WNBA, have not been called up.

The highlights

On the Brazilian side, Emanuely de Oliveira was the team’s best player. The linchpin was the scorer of the game with 23 points, in addition to two rebounds and three assists. CacĂĄ Martins also had a great performance, recording a double double of 14 points and 14 assists.

On the Argentine side, the highlight was the team performance. In total, five players reached double figures in scoring. Finally, Amaiquen Siciliano and Melisa Gretter led the team in points, with 16 each.
