Argentina prepares offensive to isolate Venezuela in the region

Measure strengthens after siege of Argentine embassy in Caracas

The Argentine government is preparing a diplomatic offensive to isolate Venezuela from Latin America’s regional blocs. Leading the effort is the country’s Foreign Minister, Diana Mondino, who is studying a series of actions that could put pressure on Nicolás Maduro’s regime.

Buenos Aires had already expressed its position at the last meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) and intends to reiterate it in the Brasilia Consensus.

The diplomatic crisis between Argentina and Venezuela escalated after Venezuelan forces surrounded the Buenos Aires embassy in Caracas last weekend, which had been under Brazilian protection since August 1. The place shelters six Venezuelan opponents.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has sought to position himself as a mediator in Venezuela’s internal conflict, exacerbated by the July 28 elections, but Caracas’ unilateral decision to withdraw custody of the Argentine embassy from Brazil was seen as a clear sign of distance between the two nations.

The siege of the building ended after news spread that former presidential candidate Edmundo González Urrutia had embarked for exile in Spain. However, Venezuelan police remain close to the embassy.
