One of the greatest classics of the 1980s, YouGooniesmay be about to get a sequel, according to reports. According to information from the newspaper The Sunthere are plans to begin discussions on the sequel as early as next summer, with a release date set for 2026-2027. Most exciting for fans, the original cast is set to return.
Released in 1985, The Goonies follows the story of a group of children trying to save their homes from foreclosure and end up finding a treasure map, leading them on an unforgettable adventure in search of a lost fortune. The film is notable for launching the careers of actors such as Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Josh Brolin (Avengers), Ke Huy Quan (Oscar winner) and Corey Feldman.
Rumors of a possible sequel have been circulating for years. In 2021, the screenwriter Chris Columbus revealed that the late director of the original film, Richard Donnerhad approached him to discuss the idea of a sequel.
He called me and said, ‘You know what we should do? Let’s get on my boat, smoke weed for three days, and come up with an idea for Goonies 2.'”, Columbus told Empire.
I said to Dick, ‘Well, first of all, I don’t smoke pot. But maybe if I come down there, we can have a few drinks together on the boat.’ I I would drop everything to do this now.”
In 2020, during a virtual cast reunion, Steven Spielbergresponsible for the original story of The Gooniesexplained why a sequel never moved forward. “
Chris, Dick and I – and Lauren [Shuler Donner] – we had many conversations about this. Every two years we come up with an idea, but it never sticks. The problem is that you guys have raised the bar so high for this genre that we’ve never been able to find a better idea than The Goonies we did in the ’80s.”
