The government is ordered to compensate Bolsonaro and Michelle in the case of the “missing” furniture.

The objects were found ten months later inside the Palácio da Alvorada itself; the government denounced “negligence” and spent more than R$ 26 million on renovations and the purchase of new furniture.

The federal government was ordered to pay R$ 15,000 in compensation to the former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and the former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro in the case of the “missing” furniture of the Palácio do Alvorada. The decision was made by the 17th Federal Court of Justice. THE Attorney General of the Union (AGU) said he would appeal the decision. The Planalto Palace was sought by the Statebut he hasn’t returned yet.

In early 2023, the President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and the first lady Rosangela da Silva, Janjaclaimed the disappearance of objects from Alvorada Palace after Bolsonaro and Michelle’s departure. Ten months later, the 261 objects were found inside the same official residence. Before the discovery, the presidential couple had purchased luxury items, justifying the purchase with the absence of the objects.

At the time, the Secretariat for Social Communication of the Presidency (Secom) reported that the objects were found in “various outbuildings” inside the Palácio da Alvorada, but did not specify the exact location.

According to the agency, three site visits were necessary to locate all the objects. The first, in November 2022, confirmed the disappearance of 261 objects; the second, early last year, identified 173 pieces; and the last, carried out in September, confirmed that no objects had been lost by the Bolsonaros. Despite the recovery of the objects, Secom said that the furniture had been “abandoned” by Bolsonaro and Michelle.

During the government transition, in late 2022, Lula and Janja complained about the conditions of the official residence and noted that assets were missing after Bolsonaro and the former first lady left Alvorada. In addition to furniture, household items, books and works of art were reported as “missing.”

Lula spent the first month of his term living in a hotel in downtown Brasilia, saying that his official residence was The Farm of Tortosummer residence of the Presidency, were deteriorated. During a breakfast with journalists in January last year, he declared that Bolsonaro and Michelle “took everything” from the residential palace.

After the discovery of the objects, the Bolsonaro couple went to court, asking for compensation of 20 thousand reais for moral damages as a “pedagogical measure”, in addition to Lula’s retraction “in the same proportion as the damage caused”, which included an interview with the press at the Palácio da Alvorada and a retraction “in front of the media GlobeNews and on official federal government communication channels.”

In the decision, the judge Diego Camara states that, since it has been proven that the objects were always at the Union, there has been damage to the image and reputation of Bolsonaro and Michelle and that the comments suggesting their involvement in the removal of furniture from the presidential palace go beyond the right of criticism, especially since, as established, the diversion did not even occur. The request for retraction through the official channels of the Presidency of the Republic and the issuance of a press release were rejected.

“As can be seen, therefore, the account of the facts transmitted shows that the clarifications reached in the administrative sphere regarding the location of the assets were promptly published on the website of the Federal Government and also received journalistic coverage in the main communication channels”, states the sentence.

In December last year, a survey by State showed that the federal government spent more than R$ 26 million in renovations and the purchase of new furniture and utensils for the presidential palaces during 2023.
