Shailene Woodley to play Janis Joplin in biopic

Over the years, several actresses have been credited with starring in films about Janis Joplin, including Amy Adams, Zooey Deschanel, Pink, and Melissa Etheridge.

One of the most iconic voices in rock and roll, responsible for hits like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece Of My Heart,” “Cry Baby” and “Maybe,” Janis Joplin will finally get a biopic. The project is taking shape more and more, especially with the definition of the actress who will play the singer: Shailene Woodley.

Throughout his career, Woodley participated in productions such as Divergent (2014), The Fault in Our Stars (2014), Ferrari (2023), Big Little Liesamong others. The biopic of Joplinproduced by Tower Hill Entertainment, received $2.49 million in funding from California Film Commission for filming.

“California meant a lot to Janis Joplin — from the balconies of San Francisco to the wooden walls of Sunset Sound, the state became the stage on which she explored not only the world of music, but the world of its vibrant humanity,” the actress said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I have a feeling that Janis would be grinning from ear to ear, going down the PCH in his psychedelic Porsche, knowing that his story is bringing opportunities and funding to the city and the people who meant so much to it,” he continued.

We thank the California Film Commission’s Motion Picture and Television Tax Credit Program — I and the other producers on this project believe that California is the only place to film a slice of Janis’ life with authenticity and truth — and we are so grateful to have been given the green light to do so!
