With seven prizes of R$ 1,400, the contest aims to recognize and strengthen the work of people who promote culture in the outskirts of the capital São Paulo; the award-winning artists will perform at the festival
The first edition of the “Prêmio Afro de Nagô: Potências da Quebrada” is receiving applications from artists and educators from the outskirts of the city of St. Paul who carry out projects that contribute to the promotion of black culture. Each winner will receive R$1,400. The goal of the Casa no Meio do Mundo collective, responsible for the initiative, is not only to reward, but also to recognize these people and strengthen their work.
“Our goal is to save the memory of black people in the outskirts of the city of São Paulo,” says Ingrid Felix, an audiovisual producer and member of the Casa no Meio do Mundo collective, which has been operating for 10 years in the northern area of the capital of São Paulo.
The idea for the competition was born out of the perception that people who were making important work in the outskirts of cities were not getting the recognition they deserved. “We realized that independent and peripheral artists rarely get recognition for their work. There are a lot of very good people with excellent quality work, but they are not recognized by the media, awards or anything else.”
There are seven award categories:
- Music video: audiovisual project directors;
- Educator: teachers and educators of public and private schools or social and cultural spaces for projects related to African and indigenous culture that promote its recognition and importance;
- Artist and/or dance group: dancers or dance groups who promote Afro-Brazilian culture;
- Funk artist and/or group: singers, musicians or DJs linked to the funk culture of Brazilian origin;
- Artist and/or rap group: musicians, MCs or DJs related to rap;
- Artist and/or group From samba: musicians and singers linked to samba;
- Poet: writer of poems focused on peripheral culture.
In its first edition, the award “seeks to honor and amplify the voices, stories, and achievements of individuals and groups who transform the realities of the peripheries,” says the collective dedicated to “valorizing black culture, recognizing everyday resistance, and celebrating the potential that emerges from the ravines, who with creativity, strength, and ascendancy, build new narratives for the future.”
The competition is part of the Rosangela Ferreira Festival, which this year will be in its third edition. The art festival also aims to be a stage for independent artists from the suburbs and hold cultural workshops. The event is named after Rosangela Ferreira, a black activist, PCD (person with disabilities), from the Jardim Brasil neighborhood, in the north of São Paulo, where she has carried out cultural and political actions.
The name of the award pays homage to the carnival group led by Rosangela, the Bloco Afro de Nagô. The aim is to recover the memory of the activities carried out in the suburbs of the northern zone in the 90s.
“We have organized two editions of the festival and in this third edition we wanted to give something more. So, in addition to the festival, we have the awards and we also have several workshops that will be held,” says Felix.
Artists and educators from the periphery of all regions of São Paulo can participate in the competition. Registration is free and can be done until September 27. Only one project per candidate is allowed.
To choose the winners, a jury of 14 judges will select four finalists per category. The decision will then be made by the public, with an open vote.
The result will be revealed in a live event on November 30, 2024. Each of the seven selected projects will receive a trophy and the value of R$ 1,400.00, in addition to performing at the Rosangela Ferreira Festival.
