Watching Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is an instant nostalgia trip, as the sequel starring Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder has plenty of nods to the first film and other pop culture elements, did you catch them all?
They mention the original title of the film: ‘Beetlejuice’ was to be called ‘Ghost House’
Winona Ryder was just 15 years old when she first played Lydia Deetz, the goth teenager in ‘Beetlejuice’. Then she is already an adult and has a television show about investigating the paranormal, called “Ghost House With Lydia Deetz”.
The name ‘Ghost House’ was to be the original title of the first film. According to screenwriter Al Gough, the production company didn’t like the name “Beetlejuice” and Tim Burton had to push hard to get his proposed title to stick.
“Day-O”, the song Lydia’s family dances to because of Beetlejuice
One of the most memorable scenes from the first ‘Beetlejuice’ film is when, in the middle of a dinner party, Lydia’s parents and their guests are possessed by ghosts singing Harry Belafonte’s ‘Day-O’, a song also known . ‘Banana Boat’.
‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ couldn’t miss an appearance of this famous song, albeit with a slightly different tempo. A children’s choir sings a gospel version of the song at the funeral of Charles, Lydia’s father and Delia’s husband, who died in a plane crash.
Plus, there’s another musical number in the style of the original film, but this time with the Deetz women performing Donna Summer’s “MacArthur Park.”
His cameo
Danny DeVito in “Beetlejuice 2” is a “Batman” Easter Egg.
Danny DeVito is one of Tim Burton’s favorite actors and had a part in ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’. He plays the ghost doorman who accidentally frees his ex-wife Juice (played by Monica Bellucci).
The ghost dies (again) after being poisoned by a blue cleaner. The chemical runs down his mouth and chin, and the image is an homage to another very important DeVito character: the penguin in “Batman Returns,” who dies while a slimy substance comes out of his mouth.
The Delia Deetz Gallery
In one scene, Delia (Catherine O’Hara) and Lydia (Winona Ryder) go to visit Astrid (Jenna Ortega) on the campus where she lives, to inform her that her grandfather Charles has died.
Astrid’s bedroom is in front of a facility called the Deetz Art Center, which is an art center where one of the famous sculptures Delia Deetz made in the first movie is on display.
